Free Pet Care
In 2007, a veterinary doctor named Kwane Stewart set up philanthropic work to help families with animals during the recession. Since that year, Doctor Stewart has selflessly cared for hundreds of pets in need.
Doctor Kwane Stewart had a thriving veterinary practice in Modesto, California. When the recession hit, Modesto was one area of California that was hit especially hard. The city’s residents suffered enormous job and home loss. The residents of the central valley city were dropping their pets off at shelters in the wake of the recession.
Dr. Stewart said before the recession; he was caring for pets that came from families who could afford vet care. Suddenly, those families could no longer afford to keep their pets. Kwane watched as the homeless population climbed every year. That was a major turning point for Doctor Stewart.
Pet Exams At Soup Kitchen
In 2011, Kwane and his son decided to set up an exam table for animals at a local soup kitchen. Dr. Stewart offered free check-ups for anyone who had a pet. Kwane’s idea took off, as people lined up at the soup kitchen for a free pet check-up.
Kwane loved being able to help the community at its animals. After his success at the soup kitchen, Doctor Stewart knew he wanted to do more. So Doctor Stewart started driving around the streets of Los Angeles, scoping out people and animals in need.
Kwane always carries a medical bag full of everything he needs. When Doctor Stewart notices a homeless person with an animal, Kwane offers to give them a free examination. Doctor Stewart genuinely enjoys getting to know the people he helps.
Homeless People’s Pets
Kwane has learned through his endeavors that the homeless population depends on their animals for emotional support. Often, the dogs and cats on the street are given better care than homeless people. A large percentage of the homeless population care for their pets before themselves. When Doctor Stewart talked to the homeless people, he learned they prioritize their pets’ health because the animals make them feel protected.
Called the “street vet,” Doctor Stewart ensures the homeless population of Los Angeles receives the animal care they need. Kwame said the animals provide the best therapy out there for those who are homeless. You can watch a video of Doctor Kwame Stewart here:
